Dangerous cosmetics part 2: Lead in your lipstick?

This is nothing new when you think about it: according to reports from Safecosmetics picked out 33 random lipsticks and decided to do lab tests on them for traces of lead. 20 of these lippies turned out to have (tr lead. Pretty alarming right?

Specially when you take into account that the smallest traces of lead can be hazardous to your health. Lead tends to build up in your body over time, re applying lipstick everyday/several times a day will lead up to quite a bit of exposure over time.

Drugstore and department store brands like L'oreal and Dior try and defend themselves by saying "there is no FDA standard for an unsafe amount of lead" and they stand behind their products safety.

The good new is that 39% of lipsticks tested didn't contain lead, including Wet N Wild's $2.00 lipsticks. Here is a list of lipsticks which didn't contain any traceable lead:

Avon Ultra Color Rich Cherry Jubilee
Body Shop Lip Colour Garnet
Clinique Long Last Lipstick Merlot
Dior Replenishing Lipcolor Red Premiere
Estee Lauder Maraschino
MAC Matte Lipstick Viva Glam 1
Revlon Superlustrous Love That Red
Revlon Superlustrous Bed of Roses
Revlon Colorstay Lipcolor Red Velvet
Tarte Inside Out Vitamin Lipstick
Wet N Wild Mega Colors Cherry Blossom

Ones that DID contain notable traces/lead:
Maybelline NY Moisture Extreme Scarlet Simmer
Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red
Peacekeeper Paint Me Compassionate
Maybelline NY Moisture Extreme Midnight Red
Maybelline NY Moisture Extreme Cocoa Plum
Dior Addict Positive Red
Cover Girl Continuous Color Cherry Brandy
LʹOreal Colour Riche True Red
Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red
LʹOreal Colour Riche Classic Wine
LʹOreal Colour Riche True Red

Thank goodness I don't own any of the lippies you mentioned that contain lead.
Thanks for letting us know!

Sadly, heavy metals and makeup are not strangers.

Thanks for posting. =)

Dang! So do you think that if a brand was on the "safe" list that we can assume all of their lipsticks are safe? I noticed that the safe brands weren't on the "lead" list.

Actually no, it's not safe to assume all the brands on the "safe list" make ALL their lipsticks lead free.

Though I am guessing most of the lipsticks Wet N wild make are probably from the same ingredients for instance.

Thank god I usually wear lip balm lol. I like to do my eyes up more.

But even with eye make up you need to watch out ladies.

When I worked in the Makeup industry I was constantly asked if our lipsticks contained lead.

Our MAC lipsticks did not!
